Around the U.S., the schoolyear has already ended for many k-12 schools (or will be in late June). As a former schoolteacher, for me, this was the most exciting part of the year because all state exams have passed, grades have been (or are in the process of) processed, and we're all getting into the summer vacation mindset. Luckily, I left the profession right when social media was taking off, so my students didn't have access to ChatGPT, social media, iPhones and Androis for cheating, etc. It was a simple time. As much as I wish we could go back to it and for everyone else to experience it, it's too late. Technology has consumed us.
To celebrate the end of class(es), this week's themed issue (School Horror, if you didn't put the pieces together) is all about horror films that take place (at least a little bit) in a school setting. In current times, we've learned that schools are not the safest place for chidlren and adults, but they make for a great setting in a horror film. From The Faculty to Class of 1999, we dive in to some of our favorites below, including our favorite horror films that take place in a school setting (or at least some scenes do).
Pat yourselves on the back and accept a gold star or two because you made it to the end of my introduction. ๐

If you haven't heard the name Chris Vander Kaay yet, you will soon enough. For found footage freaks, he's a leading voice in the genre that often doesn't get the credit is so rightly deserves. With his forthcoming Found Footage Finds video series, expected to drop on the Found streaming service in June, he offers a crash course into his favorite style of horror storytelling. In the first two episodes, he focuses on Big Foot-centric found footage and Screenlife through various talking heads and insight from genre filmmakers and fans alike. Even the most diehard fiends among us will likely find a few unknown gems to sink their teeth into. P.S. go check out Vander Kaay's .ask - it's a real banger. [written by Bee] | ![]() |

A school is not the safe haven it used to be. Aside from dying of boredom, you have to watch out for aliens taking over the world, exploding students, or stalkers. Those are only a few examples! Check out our list for some of our favorite horror films that take place in a school environment.

I have literally no idea what Garden of Eden is about. The trailer is cryptic in a Longlegs way. Images flash between a group of masked dancers twirling in the desert to grotesque and bloody images that are as ephemeral as time itself. Sign me up! [written by Bee] |
Pete Davidson takes centerstage in The Home, a nursing home-type situation akin to The Rule of Jenny Pen. The trailer promises to deliver on all the thrills and chills you could possibly want. There's blood, blood, and more blood. I'm game. [written by Bee] |

This week's Double Trouble involves two very different films with similar thematic threads. While Rene Daalder's Massacre at Central High possesses slasher flair, it's fashioned as a crime-thriller on the outside. When a new student is maimed when bullies drop a car on his legs, they start a series of murders, which, as we learn, are a long time in the making. Those getting bullied are sick of their oppressors and soon begin a crusade of their own. With some pretty gnarly set pieces - one of which includes a hang glider - and themes of bullying and revenge, the lo-fi 1976 is in many ways a precursor to the second film this week. Michael Lehmann's Heathers satirizes high school dynamics between cliques and social standing. Veronica (Winona Ryder) grows sick and tired of the Heathers and their reign over the school. But new love interest Jason (Christina Slater) has a bloodthirsty plan. While Veronica is initially averse to Jason's deadly retribution, she soon finds satisfaction in teaching her peers valuable lessons about life and death. With its gleeful edge and dark underpinning, the 1988 horror/comedy makes great use of its tonal dichotomy - one minute, you're laughing, and the next, you're squirming in your seat. It's the perfect Friday or Saturday night watch. | ![]() ![]() |
