Summer's officially in full swing, which means packed beaches, pools, and lakes, as well as a lot of other water-related adventures (for example, white water rafting). Also, it's July 4th weekend, a time when many travel to take advantage of an extended weekend. Since this newsletter is scheduled to be automatically sent out one day early, it means that the Horrorverse team is lounging poolside with a glass of wine in hand, because that's how we roll (maybe not Neomi because she's Canadian).
For many years, people have been scared to go into the water, thanks to such films as Jaws, Piranha, and The Bay, maybe even Cloverfield. It's not just because of the monsters, whether it be sharks or other things that suck the life out of people, but because oceans and lakes have a bunch of weird things swimming around in there that are just now being discovered (or not discovered yet). For example, goblin sharks are one of the scariest things swimming around somewhere out there, and I guarantee you'd let out the biggest scream if one passed you by.
Over 70% of the earth is covered by oceans, which means there's a big chance that there's something brewing under there, lurking and stalking, waiting for the right moment to come out and attack. That's what the movies want us to believe, but who knows. For now, it makes for a great tale as well as a fantastic premise for horror films past, present, and (for the) future.
Be safe, drive defensively, and be aware of what you're stepping on in the dark waters...

Co-directors Will Howarth and Tom McKeith stage their new film, In Vitro, many years in the future. It reads like a Black Mirror episode. Set on a cattle ranch, the film follows husband Jack (Ashley Zukerman) and wife Layla (Talia Zucker). Jack's cattle breeding technology results in a bizarre twist of events when Layla stumbles upon his schemes. It's as slow-burn as you can get, but once it takes off, it soars. A cautionary tale, it leans into many of the hot button issues we're having today, from A.I. to resurrecting actors (such as Paul Walker) for future appearances in films. It's only a matter of time before In Vitro becomes reality. That's terrifying. [written by Bee] | ![]() |
Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells leads co-directors David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano's new film, I Don't Understand You. When couple Dom (Kroll) and Cole (Rannells) take a vacation to Italy, a series of unfortunate events leads to death and mayhem. Meanwhile, back in the states, their surrogate goes into labor. It's a race against time to clean up their mess and get back to see their new baby. The film keeps you on your toes every step of the way, setting up for an explosively bloody finale. The dark humor, adorable characters, and the third-act bloodbath make this film a surefire delight. [written by Bee] | ![]() |

In the spirit of the 50th anniversary of Jaws, Double Trouble dives to the ends of the ocean for two films that fall on the opposite ends of the spectrum. One is campy, goofy fun while the other is a dissection of isolation. Together, they make quite a complementary pair. So, sit back, push play, and enjoy the ride!
Lake Michigan Monster, directed by Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, is a hilarious and delightful nautical adventure. Described as the "combined spirits of H.P. Lovecraft, early Sam Raimi and Mystery Science Theater 3000," the film knows exactly the kind of film it is. It's not trying to be anything else. Absurdist humor guides the ship, so to speak, as a man avenges his father's death at the hands of an underwater sea monster. If you liked Hundreds of Beavers, which Tews co-wrote with director Mike Cheslik, you'll like this equally stunning piece of comedic gold.
What's there to say about The Lighthouse? Equally absurd as Lake Michigan Monster, it fuses together a more serious tone and a gripping examination of the effects of isolation. Robert Pattinson and Willem Defoe stars as Winslow and Thomas, respectively, when they take up a post as "wickies" at a lighthouse off the coast of New England. Through suppressing weather and their fraught relationship. things aren't as they seem. Drunken nights and hallucinations pepper their long stint together, leading to a bizarre crescendo into the reality-distorting finale. Robert Eggers delights with his most wacky and wild feature film, and it's always a good time for a rewatch.

Back in 2013 on the Syfy channel, we experienced Sharknado, which took Twitter (now known as X) by storm. It was a great experience because we were reading people's reactions in real-time, and we did the same for the million sequels that came afterward. Now, Hot Spring Shark Attack is bringing back those Sharknado feelings. To be honest, the trailer is cheesy. It's filled with bad acting and music, but I am definitely going to see this in theaters when it comes out because, aside from what I wrote one sentence earlier, this is going to be a fun experience. You just have to watch the trailer, and then go see it in theaters or on VOD July 11th! [written by Brett] |
I'm a big fan of 1987's The Running Man, so when I heard that Edgar Wright is making a new film, I was on the fence. The original is a classic, but it looks like this film has a few twists. Wright's The Running Man steps in a new direction, this time with technology taking the spotlight as people will be able to track Powell's Ben Richards for a designated amount of time while being stalked. Of course, the trailer gave too much away, but I can't wait to start RUNNIN'! [written by Brett] |
Hell House LLC: Lineage is apparently a traditionally shot film, rather than found footage/mockumentary like the rest of the series. It's an odd choice, and the new teaser doesn't squelch these concerns. The clip looks interesting enough, but lacks scares to wrangle you in. I don't know; we'll see how it turns out. Access:Horror was created as a space to explore and celebrate the history, impact, and future of disability in the horror genre, through conversations, connections, and various artistic forms, including film. We acknowledge the interwoven nature of identity and media representation, and celebrate the many intersectional identities that have been at the heart of horror cinema since the beginning. We believe in horror as an agent of change, and seek to elevate discourse that uplifts marginalized creators and gives them space to create new work that imagines new worlds. Access:Horror film festival will return this year, a hybrid festival and industry summit, both online and live in New York City, to celebrate disability in horror and genre cinema. Named as one of the most accessible film festivals in the nation by Forbes, Access: Horror will kick off events on August 1st with a 6-hour program at DCTV Firehouse Cinema (87 Lafayette St.) in New York City. The festival is happening in partnership with the George A. Romero Foundation, and features the tagline, “So Inclusive, It’s Scary.” |
