WHAT TO WATCH

I had the fortune of checking out the highly anticipated The Mannequin out of Screamfest. It continues to stroke my fear of mannequins with an unhinged third act. [Read Bee's review on Bloody Disgusting]

Filmmakers have to do a ton of heavy lifting to make a one-location horror film exciting. With Day of a Lion, creative team (and twin sisters) Bianca Foscht and Dilara Foscht erect a fascinating glimpse into the lives of two women traumatized by their childhoods through a dialogue-heavy drama/thriller that presents a thought-provoking element about how the past never really stays dead. Set entirely in their childhood home, the film uses their volatile dynamic as the propulsive mechanism to drive the narrative forward. As the co-writers, co-directors, and co-stars, the Foscht twins test the audience’s patience, unraveling the story in increments that may not work for all viewers. [Read Bee's review]

GORE-MET PAIRINGS

Movie: Count Dracula (1977)

Why I Chose This Film: I chose this iteration of Dracula because it is considered one of the closest adaptations in the book. In the book, Jonathan Harker tries a dish called Paprikahendl or Chicken Paprikash. There is a quote where he describes it in a letter to Mina. "I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty. (Mem. get recipe for Mina.) I asked the waiter, and he said it was called ‘paprikahendl,’ and that, as it was a national dish, I should be able to get it anywhere along the Carpathians." In this iteration, he doesn't eat it prior to getting to Count Dracula's castle but does eat some sort of chicken dish while talking to the titular Count. He also makes Mina promise to never make it once he's escaped Transylvania.

Pairing Idea: I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest Paprikahendl as the dish to pair with the film. However, while there are many online recipes for this, I'm going to suggest that you all pick up A Gothic Cookbook by Dr. Alessandra Pino and Ella Buchan. Not only will you get a delicious recipe, but you'll get some history as well. The cookbook is absolutely gorgeous and also features other great recipes, along with history about the literature they came from.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Bee Delores | Bluesky | Instagram | Letterboxd & Sarah Stubbs | Bluesky | Instagram | Letterboxd

The average rating of 1986's Vamp currently stands at an unforgivable 3.1. It's a vampire tale starring Grace Jones, which automatically qualifies it for at least a 4.0. Co-starring Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge), the film follows a group of pledges tasked with finding a stripper when they go to the After Dark club. While scouting out the other patrons, they meet the seductive vamp Katrina (Jones), who has certain things on her mind. It's a dirty, neon-soaked excursion (directed by Richard Wenk) that features everything you could possible want in a 1980s vampire tale.

This was a challenging pairing for me. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of vampire movies. I like them but never seem to seek them out. That said, when I think of Vamp, I think of campiness and music. What goes better with that than From Dusk till Dawn? Both films take place in bars/clubs and feature a seductive vampire (Salma Hayek Pinault is stunning in this film). The film finds the Gecko brothers (George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino) feeling the US with a father and his two children that they have kidnapped. Their plan to hide in a seedy bar goes awry when it turns out that they are surrounded by vampires! The vibe of this film feels incredibly mid-90s but is fun to revisit every few years.
