WHAT TO WATCH
Instagram recently recommended a post promoting A Halloween Feast. I'd never heard of it and saw it was streaming on Tubi. While the title would have you believe it's oozing with Halloween, you'd be wrong. But according to director Guile Branco, the original title was The Prodigal Feast - the distributor believed no one would know what "prodigal" meant, so they changed the title. Executives in suits, am I right? Branco, who co-wrote the script with Arthur McClen, does his best to make it as Halloween as possible, with a quick insert of someone's decorated lawn and a Happy Halloween banner in one scene. Despite that, Branco delivers a campy, fun, and over-the-top good time. It's a low-budget film, and there's nothing wrong with that. He uses meager resources to tell his story and kills it. In the age of inescapable nostalgia, everyone obsesses over the β80s, β90s, and early aughts these days. From Totally Killer and Lisa Frankenstein to Fear Street: 1994, current horror leans into that social trend by dipping audiences back into their heyday. The late director Jeffrey Primm leads the audience into the late β90s with his debut and final feature, 213 Bones, which he co-wrote with Dominic Arcelin. Fitting comfortably next to Urban Legend and 2001βs Valentine, the slasher succeeds in its throwback sentimentality, genre thrills, and sense of fun. [Read Bee's review] |
Writer/director Luke Genton has compiled quite a horror resume over the last few years. The Bone Box, Chateau, and Sorry, Charlie are among his best career moments. Heβs demonstrated to be a masterful storyteller both on the page and behind the camera. Now, he returns with a brand new found-footage film, titled Jabberjaw, which drops on Found TV on October 17th. With the release, he plots a surprisingly terrifying story about two friends with a camera and nothing but the wide open wilderness. Itβs not reinventing anything, but it does what it sets out to do: entertain. Sometimes, thatβs all you need. [Read Bee's review] |

DOUBLE TROUBLE

I'm always screaming about how good The Uncanny is. Structured as an anthology film, it's one of those rare examples where there's not a single dud in the bunch. A star-studded cast, which includes such names as Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasence, makes this 1977 film an essential watch for any cat owner. Featuring three segments, in addition to the wraparound story, The Uncanny details all the various facets of cats - their revenge, their anger, and most importantly, their loyalty to those they love. I'm partial to the "London 1912" story, in which a wealthy socialite rewrites her will, leaving everything she owns to her cats. Her nephew and her maid conspire to destroy her will. But they're faced with much bigger and hairier problems: her clowder of cats have a very different ending in mind. If that intrigues you, I'd highly recommend giving this one a watch. It's streaming now on Tubi!
Cat's Eye doesn't get enough praise. An anthology film, it seamlessly threads together three stories in much the same way as Trick 'R Treat. A cat named General treks through New York City and then to Atlantic City and then to Wilmington, North Carolina. He's a determined little guy, and nothing will get in his way. When he's eventually adopted by Drew Barrymore's character, he's intensely protective and a fierce little fighter. We learn that soon enough when General discovers a troll living inside Amanda's (Barrymore) bedroom walls. Initially, her parents believe he's a nuisance, but he quickly proves himself. That little troll is no match against General. Much like The Uncanny, Cat's Eye is guaranteed to make a cat lover out of your - or for you to adopt even more cats. Cats are the best.
TRAILERVILLE
I know many people drool over the original Silent Night, Deadly Night, but I think it's fine. So, when it was announced Bloody Disgusting was remaking it with Rohan Campbell starring, I was already sold. With the official trailer, it looks to be a bloody good time. [written by Bee] | Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. That's all that needs said about Send Help (complementary) [written by Bee] | Sometimes, Netflix does have hits. Judging by the trailer, Indonesian horror flick The Elixir just might be a banger. I hope I'm right! [written by Bee] |
