While we may be used to sitting on our couch or heading to the theater to see a full-length film, there are hundreds, even thousands, of short films that make their rounds on the Internet and elsewhere. There have been plenty of exciting short films that have taken the Internet by storm, eventually becoming full-length features of their own. For example, Dylan Clark's short, Portrait of God, is becoming a full-length feature, thanks to Monkeypaw Productions and Sam Raimi, and, in May, A24 is releasing Kane Parsons' Backrooms based on his series of short films. How can we forget Mike P. Nelson's Sweet Revenge, which gave us a long-awaited Friday the 13th short in the Jason Universe?
In this issue, along with the latest news, book recommendations, and film recommendations, the Horrorverse team came together to share many of our favorite horror shorts, some that you may or may not be familiar with, but should definitely check out!

Short stories are like Lay’s potato chips or Oreo cookies or scoops of Jeni’s ice cream - you can’t have just one - so for our look at “Short Horror” this week, I want to share a few of my favorite collections of short stories.
The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson- Of course, I have to start with the OG. The Lottery is the most famous from the collection, but The Daemon Lover and the other James Harris stories are some of my favorites, and reading Charles as a kid must have had some impact on my sense of irony and humor.
Howl: An Anthology of Werewolves from Women in Horror edited by Lindy Ryan and Stephanie M. Wytovich- If, like me, you love all the Ginger Snaps movies, you’ll love this book. If you don’t love Ginger Snaps, you may still love this book. I tell you why here: https://candikathorror.com/reads/howl
The Hauntings Back Home by Rebecca Cuthbert- The Hauntings Back Home is a beautiful, haunting, sweet, sad, funny collection of stories that explore grief, death, and fear. You’ll find liminal spaces, eco-horror, gothic stories, folklore, and a little spice (okay, a lot in at least one story).
Roots of My Fears: Terrifying Stories of Ancestral Horror edited by Gemma Amor- Do you like feeling discomfort, dread, and fear when reading horror? Then this anthology is for you. Check out my full review if that’s not convincing enough: https://candikathorror.com/reads/roots-of-my-fears
Bonus Non-Fiction:
Monster, She Wrote by Lisa B. Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson- This book contains over 100 biographies of women who write weird or speculative fiction, including horror and sci-fi, from the 17th century to today. You’ll learn things about your favorites you may not have known, and you’ll read about women you’ve never heard of. They include recommended reading and define a few terms related to the genres, all with a sense of fun and obvious love for the subjects.
